The Silver Cliff Story

For the past half-century, this beautiful site was the home of the Silver Cliff Motel and Cliff n' Shore Motel and Cabins. Thousands of families and couples have enjoyed this special place on the North Shore for decades.

In 2005 the property was sold to Silver Cliff Properties, and the motels were literally cut up and moved to another location. Two hotels and two homes were eventually relocated and recycled to new owners, making way for this extraordinary development.

The plan for owner-occupied lakeshore homes was approved in late 2005, and construction on the homes began in June 2006, with completion of the original eight units by 2008.  Four dwelling units remain unbuilt but expected, as of 2023.

Silver Creek Cliff Tunnel

Silver Cliff is the highest bluff rising out of Lake Superior. In 1923 builders carved Highway 61 out of the cliffside 125 feet above the lake. In 1994, after three years of blasting and the removal of a million cubic yards of rock, the tunnel was completed as a safer route. To walk the old route, park at the wayside rest on the northeast side of the tunnel and walk the half-mile paved path that follows the old highway bed at cliff’s edge. Take in the wide open views of Lake Superior.

Motel and Cabins

This beautiful spot was once the site of the Cliff 'n Shore Motel and Cabins. Named "Lady of the Lake" by columnist, Jim Klobuchar, Anna Mae Peterson was the owner of the resort for 25 years. Once asked what her favorite color was, she replied, "Lake Superior blue." When pressed for what shade of lake blue, she quipped, "All of them!"

She loved the great lake in all its many moods, especially its wildest.  "Sometimes [Superior is] so awesome you can't go to sleep," Peterson said in 1994. "Maybe it's because you don't want to go to sleep but want to stay awake listening. It's almost like the ice is alive, making those sounds. And then you look out and see these beautiful fragile blue tones in the ice."
